Summary
Kaboyo Secondary School, located in Kabarole district, faced a significant challenge with the introduction of a new curriculum in 2020 that mandated the integration of ICT in all subjects. Since its inception in 1982, the school had never acquired computers, leaving students and teachers without the necessary tools to meet modern educational demands. The absence of technology in the learning environment hindered the school's ability to provide quality education, especially in ICT.
Kabarole NGOs and CBOs Association (KANCA) set out to mobilise the community and friends of Kaboyo Secondary School to equip the school computer laboratory with at least 20 computers (15 desktops and 5 laptops). As of November 2023, 7 desktops and 2 laptops had been procured and more pledges were still coming through.
Review by Wilde Ganzen Foundation
The first thing KANCA did when they decided to help Kaboyo Secondary School raise funds for setting up an ICT lab was to convene a stakeholder conference. This was a very strong move, because it made the community feel involved and responsible from the very beginning. And not only for setting up the ICT lab, but also for maintaining and improving the facilities. Another strong point is the involvement of the beneficiaries in raising the necessary funds. This has worked very well. One of the students even organised several fundraising drives and managed to raise 150,000 UGX.
The initiative has clearly promoted a culture of collaboration and support within the community, extending beyond just the school. This will undoubtedly influence future communal projects.

Short description of the project or programme the funds were raised for
Kaboyo Secondary School, located in Kabarole district, faced an enormous challenge when the new national curriculum made the integration of ICT in all subjects compulsory. They did not have a computer lab, nor did they offer ICT education. The school relied on borrowing computers during national examinations.
Having completed Change the Game Academy's local fundraising training, Kabarole NGOs and CBOs Association (KANCA) set out to mobilise the community and friends of Kaboyo Secondary School to equip the school computer laboratory with at least 20 computers (15 desktops and 5 laptops).
Summary of fundraising action
In April 2022, a stakeholders’ conference organised by KANCA ignited the initiative to fundraise for computers, aimed at enhancing the school’s ICT capabilities. On July 27, 2022, a special fundraising day was organised to sell items donated by stakeholders. Through the collective efforts of the community, they secured 9,214,800 Uganda Shillings in cash and received 14,640,000 Uganda Shillings in in-kind support. Through match funding, the Uganda National NGO Forum provided a contribution of 11,927,400 Uganda Shillings, significantly boosting the project’s resources. At the end of the campaign sufficient funds had been raised for the purchase of seven computers and two laptops, including one laptop generously donated by a former student. KANCA also contributed five computers to the cause. The mobilisation efforts engaged a diverse group of stakeholders, including alumni, parents, the Board of Governors, community members, well-wishers, students, and staff. Especially the students played an active role in supporting the initiative.

The acquisition of computers has transformed the teaching and learning of ICT at Kaboyo Secondary School. The fundraising efforts equipped the school with computers and strengthened the community’s confidence in the school’s capacity to deliver quality education.
Now, with their own equipment, Kaboyo Secondary School can accommodate students in three shifts, and this year 50 candidates across both O and A levels have registered for the final exams. The school has also designated one of the computers for administrative purposes, easing the workload in producing examinations and managing administrative tasks. The positive impact of the project is reflected in the academic performance of the students, where ICT was one of the best-performing subjects in 2023.
The community has warmly embraced the project, expressing a strong willingness to continue supporting the school. This spirit of giving has catalysed additional contributions, enabling the renovation and construction of new offices for the Head Teacher, School Bursar and Receptionist. To ensure the sustainability of the ICT lab, parents have committed to contributing 5,000 UGX per child. The school has also employed a dedicated ICT teacher, funded directly by the school. Meanwhile, the Parents Teachers Association (PTA), has taken a leadership role in supervising the use of the computers, mobilising resources, and organising further support to improve the ICT room.
