Announcing Giving for Change: new partnership from the Dutch government takes community philanthropy to the next level

Change the Game Academy is delighted to announce our participation in an exciting new partnership with the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs to invest in community philanthropy development in eight countries. The programme will promote local giving as a strategy for achieving community-led development by increasing local ownership, buy-in and rights claiming and by challenging the notion that development is something that is “done to” communities by external actors.

The support of the Dutch government through the “Power of Voices” policy framework is a significant recognition of the importance and potential of community philanthropy. Under Giving for Change we will build on past experiences and add new elements to our work.

“We’re really excited that this opportunity enables us to strengthen more groups and organizations in the area of local giving and rights claiming. In addition, through this partnership we can share best practices more widely and inspire other stakeholders to support community philanthropy.” Kees de Jong, Executive Director Wilde Ganzen Foundation

Against a global background of shrinking civic space, Giving for Change will encourage civil society organizations (CSOs), including and especially human rights organizations, to value and adopt local resource mobilization as a form of constituency building, and as a way to strengthen their position as legitimate champions and defenders of diverse causes, with strong roots in the communities they serve. While the programme will maintain an explicit focus on strengthening rights and claiming capacities of communities in relation to public government structures, another dimension of it relates specifically to challenging power dynamics, and establishing more equitable practices within the international development system itself.

Giving for Change is led by a consortium of four organizations: the African Philanthropy Network, the Global Fund for Community Foundations, and two Change the Game Academy partners: the Kenya Community Development Foundation and Wilde Ganzen Foundation. The five-year, 24 million Euro programme, will be implemented in Brazil, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Palestine and Uganda. Programme activities will include action research, Change the Game Academy and other trainings, and grants to stimulate local giving. Giving for Change will be directed and led in each country by national anchor institutions, including Change the Game Academy partners Uganda National NGO Forum (Uganda), Development Expertise Center (Ethiopia) and Association Burkinabé de Fundraising (Burkina Faso). While the role of consortium members will be to help support learning and exchange across the programme itself, as well beyond to global platforms and audiences as part of larger advocacy and influencing efforts to transform development and philanthropic practice.
