Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Civil Society Organisations in Sierra Leone

Summary

This research assesses the impact of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic on CSOs
in Sierra Leone. It also assesses the responses adopted by the latter to ensure their short-term survival and long-term sustainability. A total of 68 CSOs in the country (including 33 NGOs and 29 CBOs) completed the survey questionnaires. 16 of these CSOs participated in focus group discussions.
Lessons Learnt from this research include:
• Most of the response activities of CSOs in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic were done by networking and collaborating with other CSOs.
• The limited funding from international NGOs showed to CSOs that they need to find alternative ways of mobilising resources for their organisations, operations and programmes.
• CSOs have increased their visibility during the COVID-19 pandemic. There is need to continue such visibility enhancing activities.
• Building trust and confidence: CSOs also learnt that there was a low level of trust between beneficiaries and service providers (i.e. medical staff). This must improve in order to ensure respect, trust and honesty in the provision of essential services for beneficiaries in communities in Sierra Leone.
